Location Description


History abounds in Cromwell with old mining sites only a short distance from town. Gold was discovered here in 1862 and brought an influx of several thousand miners to the area. As gold ran out, Cromwell became the service centre for an extensive farming and fruit growing area. Old Cromwell Town is an historic reconstruction of the flooded Melmore Terrace and is a great way to discover the early beginnings of Cromwell.

With an area of 26.4 square kilometres Lake Dunstan offers with a splendid recreational playground for fishing and boating enthusiasts and activities suited for the family. The future for Cromwell is in farming, horticulture, viticulture and tourism. Cromwell is known as the 'Fruit Bowl' of the south. It has a strategic location between the Lindis and the Haast Pass, and acts as a hub between the towns of Wanaka, Queenstown and Alexandra.

Cromwell has a population approaching 4,000 people and is rapidly growing, has wide-reaching potential and is becoming more popular each year.
